Officer’s Gulch: A Gem Location for Colorado Elopements

Colorado is an eloper’s paradise, with pristine alpine lakes, golden aspen groves and pine forests, epic mountain views, and even red rocks. As a long-time Colorado local and Colorado elopement photographer, I’m in awe with the various places for incredible photo opportunities that can cater to each couple. On each road trip, I’m constantly scouting for new places and ideas, and was taken aback by this random detour to a short trail and river-fed lake. And just off the highway!

If you’re wanting an elopement with that iconic “Colorado feel” that’s not too far from Denver, is peaceful, accessible, and offering a full-day experience in surrounding Summit County, Officer’s Gulch might be exactly what you’ve been looking for.

Why Officer’s Gulch is Perfect for an Elopement

If you’re dreaming of a Colorado mountain elopement that’s both accessible and peaceful, this spot is hard to beat.

You can step out of your car and be surrounded by alpine beauty within minutes. That means no stress and no rush, but lots of space to enjoy your wedding day.

It’s especially beautiful for:

  • Lakeside elopement ceremonies

  • Quiet first looks amongst pine tree groves

  • Candid, connection-focused portraits

  • Couples bringing a few guests (without the chaos of more popular locations)

And if you’re worried about crowds like you’d find at places like Sapphire Point… this is currently one of the least crowded elopement locations in Summit County.

Easily Accessible

If you’re a couple looking to have an intimate, tucked away location but still include your family and friends (even grandma!) this is an excellent choice. Located right off of highway 70, this sparkling mountain lake is located just feet from the parking lot along a well-marked trail. Say “I do” on a rock overlooking the water with your loved ones standing on the shore nearby. Afterwards, grab some portrait shots on the picturesque bridge back to your car, or walk the short perimeter around the lake for different perspective shots and new backdrops. Some of my favorite backdrops were from standing on the opposite side of the lake, where snow-capped peaks towered over.

Short Hike

Not a hiker? This is the spot. There is no long trek to “earn” the view. In fact, the whole loop around the lake is less than a mile, and almost no elevation gain. The trail is just rugged enough to feel as if you’re miles into nature, but you can be back at the car in half an hour. I’d recommend slowing it down though; every few steps offered a brilliant new perspective of the mountains, pockets of pine trees, and transparent emerald water. No matter which way you face, the photo opportunities are incredible!

Little to No Crowds

This trail is located just off of the interstate, so there is highway noise that more avid hikers try to avoid by traversing father into the wilderness. It is also just just a “quick stop” for tourists to take in for a moment, resting their legs along a road trip. This prevents Officer’s Gulch from being a full-day destination spot for many, and thus creates more quiet, private surroundings. Though privacy isn’t guaranteed, you’re likely to find pockets of time or area around the trail where you are alone.

Because it’s a more low-key, natural space:

  • Leave No Trace is essential

  • Ceremonies should stay simple and respectful of the environment

  • It’s best suited for small, intimate gatherings

No permits are needed to have a ceremony here for small groups. But keep in mind that this is public land and free to use on a first-come, first-serve basis, so it’s important to be respectful of others enjoying the space. I recommend no more than 10 guests to keep it spacious, intimate, and quiet in the serene settings.

Best Time and Seasons for an Officer’s Gulch Elopement

  • Summer & Early Fall: Green trees, snow-melted mountains, and easy access

  • Fall: Subtle golden tones and quieter weekdays

  • Winter: Snow-covered mountains and trees and a completely different kind of magic (just be prepared for cold and limited access along trail)

  • Spring: Early spring usually still looks like winter; late spring will have snow-capped peaks and possible budding flowers/trees, but trail may be very muddy

Sunrise and sunset are both beautiful here, but if you want the most privacy, sunrise tends to be your best bet.

Explore nearby Breckenridge, Silverthorne, and Frisco

One of the best parts about eloping at Officer’s Gulch is how close you are to some of Colorado’s most charming mountain towns. Within a short drive, you can wander through Frisco for local artwork and craft coffee, celebrate dinner at a brewery in Silverthorne, or head over to Breckenridge for a more lively, historic mountain town experience.

These nearby spots give you the opportunity to turn your elopement into a full, intentional experience, and explore multiple epic Colorado locations in one day!

Officer’s Gulch is definitely one of my favorite little gems I’ve come across, and would love to build this into your perfect elopement day! But I’m not just here to capture storytelling images; I’m stoked to be your elopement navigator who helps with custom timelines, vendor recommendations, and location scouting.
